Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are great companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a range of members. They are prone to becoming bored and find different ways to entertain themselves when their owners do not interact with them enough. If not properly socialized macaws may become aggressive and even bite. It is essential to have clear boundaries set so the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They should spend at least two to three hours every day outside for mental stimulation and physical exercise. The birds can be quite loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can emit ear-splitting screeches and loud cries that could be disruptive to those who live in condos or apartments.
This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Because of this, DNA testing is the only method to determine sex. Once sex is established pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. It is not an easy process, and it is important that the owner has patience and understands that this isn't an undertaking to be taken lightly. The use of positive reinforcement can speed up the process and aid in resolving any behavior issues.
Lolita's care
For decades activists have been calling for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.
The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They are a danger to her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as an ancestor, on a plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could stay for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has lived isolated at Seaquarium for over 40 years. The nation's most active activists, including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her departure from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
A healthy diet is important for the health of a gold and blue macaw. These beautiful birds require premium food, as well as plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grains. In captivity, a macaw well-fed can expect to live for up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of space to move around and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on the status of Lolita's health However, there are still questions. Akromas and others who have been trained or supervised Lolita's health in the past are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating about 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring and squid daily.
Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita is being criticised for the quality of food that they feed to killer whales. The 57-year old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in 1970. Although the species is in danger, she lives in a tank that many believe is too small.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is unquestionable Lolita's health continues deteriorate. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and want to see that she is returned to the wild. Lolita is a resident of the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as an attraction for tourists for many years. She has been fighting chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile state.
The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any details regarding the condition of Lolita. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has published monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates show that Toki is aging rapidly and her health has declined.
It is not clear what health issues are plaguing the orca, as her captor is not obliged to disclose this information. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a common cause in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health issues Many are hopeful that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than ever before. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to removing the whale of her tank and into her natural habitat in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal issue.
